Susie Clifton, Counseling Intern
Biography
Susie Clifton is a Counseling Intern at The Life Change Group, which focuses on achieving balance, growth and fulfillment for individuals, families and couples. Susie comes to us as part of her internship through Georgia State University. She grew up in Forsyth and now lives in the greater Atlanta Metropolitan area. Susie is currently pursuing a LAPC (Licensed Associate Professional Counselor) degree.
Experience
Susie is pursuing her Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, based on a life-long goal to follow in her mother's footsteps as a healthcare professional. She has experience working with a wide range of populations including children and adolescents, as well as older adults. Susie works with individuals and families dealing with grief, loss, and PTSD.
Working with Adolescents
In her work with adolescents, Susie follows many of the traditional play therapy practices. "You might find it surprising, but there are a lot of board games involved with getting to know and connecting with adolescents," says Susie. "Effective counseling is about trust and connections. Play therapy is one of the best ways to build both, so we commonly use these types of entry points to dig into more of the root issues." Adventure therapy is an adjunct counseling technique that uses many of the same constructs but just applying those in an outdoor environment. Susie has experience in both methods.
Philosophy
Susie's counseling philosophy is based on existential therapy. This therapy focuses on self-determination and emphasizes everyone's ability to make rational choices and create their own maximum potential. As part of her training, Susie also participated in counseling to understand what it's like for her clients and how to work within both individual and group therapy.
