Biography

Dr. Amor Kok is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Georgia. She has a Bachelor of Economic Sciences Degree, Bachelors of Commerce Degree (Honors), Masters of Guidance and School Counseling, Specialist in Education: Supervision and Administration, Doctorate in Education: Leadership and School Improvement. Prior to joining The Life Change Group, her experiences included working as an Accountant, Teacher, School Counselor, and Exceptional Services Counselor (Special Needs). Dr. Kok taught AP Economics, Economics and International Business. Amor currently serves on the Board of Exceptional Ops in Fayette County and as a member of Fayette Factor. She is a member of the district PBIS team of the Fayette County Schools. Amor’s greatest strength is working as a team player with other mental health and medical providers to serve her clients and their families in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner.

Experience

With Amor’s extensive knowledge of Education Law and Special Needs experience, she has a clear understanding on how to help parents, children, adolescents and young adults. Amor will help her clients navigate the challenges they may face in school, college and work settings. Amor’s passion is helping people of all ages understand their disability, finding their strengths, as well as developing and expanding their many abilities. She is very knowledgeable about resources in the community to support and assist people of all ages. Amor follows the Family Systems Therapy approach and believes in the strength of the family unit in helping her clients. Supporting parents, other care givers, and siblings to understand their loved one’s disability is crucial in helping the client. She would also like to help caregivers to manage their own stress levels and to balance all their responsibilities.

Style & Approach

Amor also specializes in working with immigrant families, helping them to adjust and acculturate. Amor is fluent in English and Afrikaans (Dutch dialect). She was born and raised in Zimbabwe, immigrated to South Africa in 1977, and immigrated from there to Georgia, U.S.A, in 1991. Amor follows the Person-centered and Solution Focused therapy approaches in moving a client forward. Amor specializes in group therapy for children, adolescents and young adults that have social skills deficits. Amor has worked with clients on the autism spectrum, including non-verbal learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, and executive functioning challenges. She completed her Doctoral research on social skills training that included topics such as communication, perspective taking, self-advocacy, self-esteem, self-regulation, interpersonal skills, and soft skills in the workplace. Amor has conducted groups and has worked individually with young people in transitioning from elementary to middle school, high school, college, and work environments. Dr. Kok has conducted numerous training sessions for teachers in social skills training. She has been a presenter at the Georgia School Counselors Association, the GAEL leadership Conference, and the National Autism Conference in Denver recently.

As an LPC she utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to bring about behavioral changes in working with clients of all ages. Amor has training in mindfulness, in addition to other strategies in teaching stress management. As a mother of three grown children, she is supportive and possesses a non-judgmental approach in helping families overcome the challenges they face. Amor’s colleagues describe her as authentic, generous, amiable, encouraging, genuine, compassionate, kind, and spunky.
